RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, identified by intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in hills just above the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of access tunnels leading to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over parts of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation shows the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with our partners, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces who took part in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," he commented. "They were part of a great many UK service members deployed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate militants who endanger our safety, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security at home and powerful internationally."

Last December, the American forces executed what it called a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
