Wimbledon Embraces Video Review Technology This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review systems will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the right to challenge particular rulings made by the official, following the protocol currently in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be operational on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move arrives only a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to review specific situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where spectators have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
